Disney’s Searchlight Pictures is currently developing a new drama film about Chevalier de Saint-Georges’.
The film will star Kelvin Harrison Jr. in the titular role in the true-life tale of the man known as the Black Mozart, who was born in the Caribbean. Joseph Bologne was the illegitimate son of a plantation owner and a slave who was then educated in France and became a fencing master, which served as an entrée into French high society. With his music and operas, he ascended to the upper echelons of Marie Antoinette’s Paris society until a court scandal laid him low.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Samara Weaving will also be appearing in the film and will be playing the role of Marie-Josephine, who is a woman who yearns for creative fulfilment outside of her empty, loveless marriage and defies her controlling husband to become the voice of Bologne’s opera.
She has previously starred in Searchlight’s “Ready Or Not”, the upcoming Paramount GI Joe film “Snake Eyes”, and earlier this week, it was revealed she will star in the upcoming Hulu/Star Original film “The Valet”.
“Chevalier de Saint-Georges” will be directed by Stephen Williams, with the script written by Stefani Robinson, who has previously worked on the FX series “Atlanta” and “What We Do in the Shadows”. She will also be producing the film along with Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe and Dianne McGunigle.
