After the successful Marvel animated movie, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse,  Phil Lord and Chris Miller have signed a new 5 year deal with Sony Pictures TV.  The pair have just finished a deal from 20th Century Fox TV.

This deal is in the nine-figure range and the team will create and develop their own comedy and drama projects for broadcast, cable and streaming as well as supervise other writers’ projects.

Some of the new shows being developed include many television series based on Marvel characters including Spider-Man.  Though no details on these new Marvel shows have been announced and these series don’t have to be animated.

While Sony does have an existing contract for making Marvel movies based on Spider-Man and characters including Venom, Black Cat and Morphius.  In February 2015, Disney, Marvel Studios and Sony announced a deal to share the Spider-Man film rights, leading to a new iteration of Spider-Man being introduced and integrated into the MCU. The deal allows Sony to distribute and have creative control over MCU films where Spider-Man is the main character such as Homecoming and Far From Home while Disney distributes the ones where he is not, such as Endgame or Infinity War.

And Disney do hold the rights to Spider-Man and the related characters for everything else, including merchandise, comic books, video games and TV shows.

So this new announcement of new Marvel shows will still be under the control of Marvel and Sony have previously announced they are making shows for Disney+.  And Sony is looking to take advantage of all the money being spent by streaming platforms on new exclusive shows.

Sony already make a number of shows for Disney including ABC’s Good Doctor and The Goldbergs.  And Disney have confirmed they will be still be utilizing third party companies to create content for Disney+.

In the statement: SPT chairman Mike Hopkins said:

“This is a significant milestone for our television business, having the opportunity to work with two of the most creative forces in the industry in both our film and television businesses.  Building on our strong IP and creating new franchises has been a key focus for SPE, and the best way to do that is to invest in remarkable storytellers like Phil and Chris. We are thrilled to welcome them to the SPT family, and I want to thank [SPT co-presidents] Jeff [Frost], Chris [Parnell] and Jason [Clodfelter] for all their hard work in pulling this deal together.”

Phil Lord and Chris Miller said:

We are so grateful to everyone at Sony Pictures Television for choosing to partner with us and expand our enduring relationship with the studio.  Together we aim to make groundbreaking work of the highest quality and integrity, and to place that work in convenient proximity to your eyeballs and earholes, wherever you may be.”

Sony Pictures Television president Jeff Frost said:

Phil and Chris have reimagined every medium and genre they have touched.  Whether it’s television, features or animation, they have created their own unique brand and style. We are so excited to be working with these brilliant creators and showrunners and are looking forward to collaborating with them in every aspect of television — comedy, drama, animation and beyond.”

The team have created many series including Last Man on Earth, Son of Zorn and the upcoming Bless the Harts animated series.

Sony have made animated series featuring Spider-Man in the past, but the huge success of Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, has shown Disney that they are very capable.  And with these animated series being family friendly, they would be a huge boost for the new streaming service.

Last week, Disney’s Kevin Mayer said that everything flowing through brands like Marvel will eventually end up on Disney+.  And with Disney+ already coming to deals with companies such as AT&T and Paramount over distribution over movies and shows, this could be an exciting time for Marvel fans.
