Earlier this year, Disney signed a deal with Orbit Showtime Network (OSN) to provide Disney+ Originals throughout the Middle East and Africa, where the actual Disney+ app has not yet launched.

Disney has been rolling out its streaming service throughout the world, with the app only recently launching across Latin America.  It looks like it won’t be too long until Disney+ starts rolling out through Africa and the Middle East.

In a recent interview with Variety, OSN’s CEO Patrick Tillieux, spoke about the deal with Disney:

We have this pretty unique deal with Disney whereby we have the Disney Plus original content actually embedded into our OSN app. I don’t know if there is another example anywhere in the world of this…That’s for the moment. For the future I can imagine (and this is obviously the goal of both partners, Disney and ourselves) that we will find an easier articulation of their ambition of a standalone Disney Plus app, and our ambition of remaining the entertainment leader here in the region.

We know each other, we understand the market and its complexities. They understand what our added value is, ranging from methods of payment, to compliance issues, and regional sensitivities. That is highly appreciated by them in this partnership, and we appreciate the quality of the content…

Disney is set to announce more details on its streaming plan at next weeks Investor Day event on December 10th, where more details on the international rollout of Disney+ and Star will be announced.

The deal between OSN and Disney resulted in Disney+ Originals being distributed throughout the area, without having to get the infrastructure in place and also to bring in revenue, which is obviously vital with the company impacted so much by the Coronavirus.

Hopefully, soon, Disney+ will be available through the Middle East and Africa.  As this will no doubt, continue to build Disney+ into a global platform to rival Netflix, which is already available throughout these countries.

Are you waiting on Disney+ to launch in your region?

My theory is that it's going to launch in April 2021 because that's when OSN and Disney announced the partnership. I do hope that they do launch a Disney+ app because yes having the Disney+ Originals are nice, we aren't getting the full experience like with Soul launching on Disney+, we aren't getting that on OSN.
