On Tuesday 23rd February, Disney+ is set to get a massive overhaul of its parental controls globally.  This is being done to keep Disney+ suitable for audiences of all ages and to keep the family-friendly experience parents expect from the app.

The new parental controls will include the ability to set limits on access to content for specific profiles based on content ratings and the ability to add a PIN to lock profiles with access to mature content.  This can help stop younger viewers from flipping to another family members profile to get around the lock.

Here is a look at the new age rating settings for profiles:

The app is receiving updates on different platforms to get ready for the launch of the new parental controls and the new “Star” general entertainment brand in many countries around the world including the UK, Australia, Canada and across Europe.

Currently, Disney+ only offers two types of profiles, one unrestricted and one limited profile for children under 7.  The children’s profile also limits content that has culture advisory warnings like Peter Pan.

The addition of these new parental controls will help parents across the world have better control over what content is available to their children.  It’s unclear if more mature content will soon be heading to Disney+ in the United States, but it does give them some more flexibility, especially over slightly more mature themes that National Geographic sometimes goes into.  It’s also likely that this is probably easier for Disney to implement the settings globally rather than on a country by country basis.

Here’s an example of some of the current ratings:

  • WandaVision is rated 12+
  • Wolverine is rated 16+
  • The Incredible Dr Pol is rated 9+
  • Moana is rated 6+
  • Toy Story is rated 0+

You will be able to adjust the parental controls from Tuesday 23rd February by going into the profiles section of Disney+.
