This time next year, the first of four new “Avatar” sequels are due to arrive in cinemas and today, Entertainment Weekly revealed some brand new images from the upcoming film.
The second “Avatar” film (which currently doesn’t have an official title) is set about 14 years after the original and tells the story of a former human soldier Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), who have settled down and started a family, and much of the film centres on their preteen offspring.
“Avatar’s” producer Jon Landau explained:
“Ultimately, the sequels are a story about family, and the lengths parents will go through to keep that family together and keep them safe. I always say that Jim’s movies have universal themes — and really, there’s no more universal theme than family.”
In this new film, we will be introduced to a new clan of reef-dwelling Na’vi called the Metkayina, which is described as “Bora Bora on steroids.”
Because most of the story in the upcoming film and also the third film in the franchise, is set underwork, they engineered a new way to record the actors’ tiniest movements and expressions accurately while submerged.
Here are some new photos behind the scenes, along with some concept artwork from the film:
Principal photography has already wrapped on the first two Avatar sequels, which are due in 2022 and 2024. Work has already begun early postproduction on some scenes. The fourth and fifth movies are currently due to be released in 2026 and 2028. Landau added:
“What we are doing now, from a story standpoint and a world standpoint, is on a much larger scale. That’s both exciting and challenging. We are putting much more detail, first and foremost, into the performances of the cast, but we’re [also] putting much more detail and diversity into the world that we are creating.”
The first “Avatar” film is available on Disney+ and we should expect the upcoming sequel to arrive on Disney+ in 2023.
