Disney was originally going to release their new live action version of Mulan in March, however when the current Coronavirus situation resulted in cinemas around the world being closed, the release was pulled. Unlike Pixar’s Onward, which was rushed to Disney+ as it had already been released in cinemas, only the premiere had taken place for Mulan.  So shortly afterwards, Disney announced it was moving Mulan’s release date to July 24th, removing the speculation that it would be heading straight to Disney+ and continue with a theatrical release.

However, Mulan will still be coming to Disney+ at some point in the future, but since Disney has rushed a number of titles to Disney+ in some countries, including Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker and Frozen 2, it’s difficult to tell exactly when a movie will be released with the current situation.  Especially as Mulan will need to be released in as many countries as possible, especially China, to recoup its costs and make a profit.

This week, Disney’s official Disney+ help support twitter account replied to a question about Mulan and let it slip that Mulan would be coming to Disney+ on October 27th.

This tweet was later removed, which could be for a number of reasons.

  • The date isn’t supposed to be public yet, since Disney will want to encourage fans to go see it in theaters.
  • It’s the original Disney+ release date before the delay, since October 27 is just over 200 days later, which is around the time movies arrive on Disney+ after their cinema release.
  • If the theatrical release of Mulan is delayed again, it’s Disney+ release would also be delayed.
  • Since all Disney is now focused on releasing everything on Friday’s, October 27th is a Tuesday, so the penciled in release date is now incorrect.

The Disney+ help page has made mistakes before, mentioning titles like the Weekenders, and Jake Long American Dragon, which still haven’t appeared on Disney+ months later.

Right now with the Coronavirus situation, with any release date, its best to assume everything is delayed until proven otherwise!   But with confidence in cinemas at a low, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Mulan arrive much earlier than the usual 200+ days after a theatrical release.

The original animated Mulan movie and it’s sequel, are available to stream on Disney+ now.

Do you think Mulan is coming to Disney+ in October?
