Walt Disney CEO Bob Chapek has announced that “Mulan” will be coming exclusively to Disney+ on September 4th in
US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Western European markets.

However, it won’t be coming to Disney+ in the usual way, it will be a premium rental and will be priced at $29.99.  It doesn’t look like you need to be a Disney+ subscriber to rent the movie.

Once purchased, Disney+ subscribers will have continuous access to the film for as long as they remain subscribers to the service.

Mulan will also launch in cinemas in selected countries on the same date.

This is expected to be a one-off release and Mulan will be added to the Disney+ subscription at a later date, similar to how it would have happened with a theatrical release.

What do you think of this idea of a premium rental?

What about countries that don't have Disney+ or open cinemas ? Are we... simply left without being able to watch Mulan ?

I think that's stupid. Disney+ has had a track record of offering films as part of the standard subscription. This is gonna annoy people if they see Mulan without knowing about the additional rental. If they had wanted to do this, they should've offered in on the normal streaming rentals (VUDU, Google, Amazon) and only add to Disney+ when they were ready to do it anyway.
