Today, Disney released the second film from the “Diary Of A Wimpy Kid” franchise, based on the second book, “Rodrick Rules”, on Disney+.  The film follows riotous antics of angst-ridden, disaster prone, middle school student Greg Heffley continue in “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules,” focusing this time around on his complicated relationship with older brother Rodrick. A spikey-haired high school student, Rodrick is lazy and undisciplined, and spends way too much time practicing with his rock band, Löded Diper. While he loves to torment Greg, he ultimately has a deep affection for his younger brother.

This past week, I spoke with the book’s creator Jeff Kinney, who is also a producer on the new film, and he revealed that a third film is currently in development,

So, we got to broaden the wimpy world, and we’re working on another movie right now, and we get to broaden it even further. So, it’s really cool to be able to keep building out this world.

I asked him for a little more detail on the third film, which, unfortunately, Jeff wasn’t able to discuss in more detail:

Oh, boy, I’m not allowed to say that right now or Disney will, I don’t even know what they’ll do. But I will say that we’ve got at least one project that we’re cranking on right now, and I’ll have to let Disney communicate that one.

Back when the first animated film was released on Disney+, Jeff Kinney had previously said that he wanted to make an animated film for all of his books.  Currently, there are over 17 books in the series, so there is plenty of scope for future films, but obviously, the future of more films in this franchise, will depend on how many people watch the films on Disney+.

20th Century Studios has previously made live-action adaptions of many of the books in the franchise, with the later films, merging together a couple of the books together, such as “Dog Days”, which was based on the ninth book of the same name, but it also has elements of the seventh, eighth, and tenth books in the series.  So while it would seem logical the third film will be an animated version of the third book, “The Last Straw”, Disney might follow a similar path to what we saw with the live-action versions, with a hybrid story if they feel the story isn’t strong enough on its own.

“Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules” is out now on Disney+, along with the first animated film and multiple live-action versions from 20th Century Fox.
