During last years Disney Investor Day, a brand new drama series called “The Dropout”, which is inspired by the ABC News podcast of the same name chronicling the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes and her company, Theranos. The new series is being developed by 20th Television and Searchlight TV for Hulu in the US and as a Star Original for Disney+ internationally.
Earlier this week it was revealed that Amanda Seyfried will be replacing Kate McKinnon in the lead role and that “Lost’s” Naveen Andrews is also going to star in the series as Sunny Balwani.
Deadline has reported that Michael Showalter will be directing multiple episodes of the show and will also be an executive producer on the limited series. He has previously directed the film “The Big Sick . As a writer and producer, Michael’s other film credits include “Wet Hot American Summer”, “They Came Together”, and “The Baxter”. Michael has co-created numerous television projects including “Wet Hot American Summer”, on Netflix, as well as “Search Party”.
“The Dropout” follows Elizabeth Holmes (played by Amanda Seyfried), who is the enigmatic Stanford dropout who founded medical testing start-up Theranos, was lauded as a Steve Jobs for the next tech generation. Once worth billions of dollars, the myth crumbled when it was revealed that none of the tech actually worked, putting thousands of people’s health in grave danger.
