Earlier this year, “Aladdin” actor Mena Massoud posted on social media a quote that Ezra Bridger says in an episode of “Star Wars: Rebels
“Hey, just so you know, when I escape I won’t hurt any of you.”
This post set off many rumours around the internet that Mena Massoud had been either cast as Ezra in an upcoming Disney+ series, or was just dropping hints to those creating the show that he would fit the role. These rumours began to gain more traction as other characters from the Rebels series including Ahsoka and Thrawn were referenced in the second season of “Star Wars: The Mandalorian”. Making it much more likely that Ezra would also be making the jump to live-action.
Recently, when promoting a new animated film “Lamya’s Poem”, Mena spoke with Screen Rant about that post and if he might be coming to our screens as a young Jedi anytime soon.
“Yeah. Just manifesting, just manifesting, trying different things. Yeah, there’s not much more I can say about that, but, you know, I had heard murmurings that this role was coming up and this is becoming a real thing. So I just kinda wanted to throw my name in the ring and — yeah, just part of manifesting what you want. I think we live in an age now that’s so different than ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s, Hollywood, where there was no social media. It was really just your representatives, putting things out there for you. But now, we have the ability to put things out there for ourselves because of social media and because we can put things out there. So yeah, I just wanted to put it out there, I guess… It would be a dream come true. Obviously, I’ve already had one of my dreams come true with Aladdin, but I also think I could just really do it justice. I’ve worked on that kind of big, massive set before on Aladdin. I think I have that under my belt now and thankfully the film did really well, so I think I’ve proven that I can be successful in that environment. I think it would just be a great opportunity to take everything that I learned on a set like Aladdin and implement it into the Star Wars or DC or Marvel universe. We’re talking about manifesting, so yeah, it would mean a lot, it would mean a lot. I think I would also do a solid job and work really hard. I like what they’re doing with that world and how they’re expanding the universe.”
One thing that is very noticeable from his response is that he is saying a lot, while also being extremely vague, as he still seems to be very open to joining the Star Wars universe, but on the other hand, he may have the role and so, therefore, can’t discuss it. He wouldn’t be the first person to take to social media to show an interest in playing a character, actor Simu Liu got the attention of Marvel through social media to play Shang-Chi. And this also worked for Rosario Dawson, who expressed an interest in playing Ahsoka before being cast in the Star Wars universe.
Mend Massoud has been very open about wanting to play the role of Ezra and certainly looks the part, but what do you think? Should Mena play Ezra in the upcoming Star Wars Disney+ series?
