According to Deadline, Jake Schreier has joined the project as a director.  He has previously directed “Robot & Frank”, Netflix’s “Beef” and FX’s “Dave”.

The project is being written by Eric Pearson, who has previously written “Black Widow” and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is going to be producing it.

Nothing has officially been announced regarding the “Thunderbolts” film, but its likely that this project could be officially unveiled during the Marvel Studios panel at the D23 Expo in September.

In the comic books, the group is a team of supervillains or antiheroes, which are put together by General Thaddues ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross, but there have been many different versions of the team throughout the years.   Thunderbolt Ross has already been introduced in the MCU in both “The Incredible Hulk” and “Black Widow”.   The character was played by the late William Hurt, so there are only a few options, such as recasting the character, not including him (which would be unlikely since the team is named after him), or he is digitally recreated, like Grand Admiral Tarkin in Star Wars, it might change how the team is put together.

Disney has already been building a Thunderbolts team within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and some of the post-credit scenes involving Contessa Valentina, who is played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, where she is seen putting a team together, having spoken with US Agent and Yelena Belova.

Other possible team members could be other villains already introduced such as Baron Zemo, Ghost, Taskmaster, The Abomination, and the Winter Soldier.  Plus they could also include villains from upcoming films and Disney+ series.

Apparently, sources close to Deadline have said that Marvel has already been in touch with some of the possible members of the team to keep an opening in their schedules for next summer when it shoots.

One of the benefits a “Thunderbolts” movie has, is that, much like with the Avengers films, most of the main team members will have been established in other films and series, reducing the need to cover their origins.
