Marvel Executive Reveals “Okoye” Disney+ Series Is Unlikely
Way back in 2021, it was reported that Marvel was developing a new series for Disney+ featuring Okoye, who is the General of the Dora Milaje for Wakanda.
Danai Gurira has played the character since her debut in “Black Panther”, and she has also appeared in the sequel, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, along with both “Avengers” movies, “Infinity War” and “Endgame”. She also recently appeared in the animated series, “What If?”.
At the time, Marvel Studios was under pressure from then Disney CEO Bob Chapek to create as much content for Disney+ as possible as the MCU was on a high following the events of “Avengers: Endgame” and Disney was trying to get as many subscribers as possible.
Since then, we’ve not heard too much about a potential Okoye Disney+ series, bar an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” in 2023, where she was asked if her character might get a “Black Panther” spinoff Disney+ series, to which she replied:
“Stephen… I have been told that I can gently allude to this possibility. So, I am gently alluding. Just gently.”
Over the past year or so, we’ve seen Marvel go through a major strategy overhaul, to focus on quality over quantity, resulting in many projects being cancelled or put on hold.
During a recent interview with Pay Or Wait to promote “Daredevil: Born Again”, Brad Winderbaum, who is the head of Marvel Television and Streaming, was asked about the Okoye Disney+ series, to which he replied:
“I think fans of Okoye are going to be excited to see her come back, but I don’t think it’s going to be in a television show. I can’t say where and when, but I think there’s a lot to look forward to.”
Officially, Marvel never announced or confirmed that an Okoye series was in development for Disney+. So, it’s unclear how far the project was into development, especially with the impact of the pandemic and writers/actor’s strikes.
Later this year, Marvel is releasing a new animated show, “Eyes Of Wakanda”, which follows the adventures of brave Wakandan warriors throughout history. In this globe-trotting adventure, the heroes must carry out dangerous missions to retrieve Vibranium artefacts from the enemies of Wakanda. They are the Hatut Zaraze, and this is their story. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Okoye pop up at some point in that animated series.
Also, Marvel is currently developing a third “Black Panther” film, which will star Denzel Washington, so it’s very likely Okoye will return to our screens for that film. Plus, there are two “Avenger” movies set to be released in 2026 and 2027, which would also potentially offer the character an opportunity for a cameo or more.
Roger’s Take: There were so many projects in development in the early stages of Disney+, especially when Disney was willing to spend billions of dollars on new content to encourage new subscribers. However, with a drastic slowdown in the number of projects being made, I can’t see a series about Okoye being on that list. However, with another “Black Panther” film happening, I think we will certainly see her again soon.
