2021 will see Disney release five live-action and one animated series on Disney+ from Marvel Studios, but for many fans, they also want to have access to these shows on physical media such as DVDs and Blu-Rays.

In a recent interview with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, while promoting the new “WandaVision” Disney+ show, he was asked by ComicBook.com if WandaVision and other Marvel Studios titles which are hitting Disney+ will ever be available as physical media.

“Is Mandalorian on Blu-ray?”

Which it isn’t.  He continued

“The truth is, I don’t know. That’s a good question for which I will look for the answer. I don’t know.”

And added:

“You can pay a very low fee per month and have access to something that you can put it on your TV whenever you want!”

Physical media sales have continued to drop year on year, as more fans turn to streaming platforms like Disney+ to consume media.  However, physical media has some advantages of streaming, such as higher picture quality; it isn’t reliant on the internet and cannot be edited or altered after it’s released.

No doubt Disney’s hope is by not making the shows available on physical media will also encourage more people to stay subscribed to Disney+ and provide an incentive for years to come for new subscribers.

Other platforms such as Netflix have released some of their originals on physical media, but it can be years after being released on Netflix.

As a collector of physical media, I would love to see Disney release some of the Disney+ shows on Blu-ray and DVD. Although streaming does have its advantages, it also has disadvantages that make physical important. The biggest issue (next to censorship) is the streaming quality is dependent on your internet connection, which means if you don’t have good internet speeds, your streams will either buffer severely or be in lower quality. With physical, you get the best possible quality that even the best streaming can’t match. There are people who can’t use streaming because their internet isn’t sufficient for it, so for those people (along with collectors) physical media is certainly useful, even when the content is already available on streaming.
