At last years D23 Expo, a brand new “Lizzie McGuire” series for Disney+ was announced to be coming to the streaming service in 2020.

The new story picks up as Lizzie McGuire is just about to turn 30. She seemingly has it all – her dream job as an assistant to a fancy New York City decorator, her dream guy and a picturesque Brooklyn apartment – but things aren’t always as they seem. With a little help from her friends, her loving family and her 13-year-old alter-ego in animated form, Lizzie navigates the ups and downs of adulthood.

The new show sees original cast members Hallie Todd, Robert Carradine, and Jake Thomas will all be returning to reprise their roles as Jo, Sam, and Matt McGuire, along with Hillary Duff as Lizzie McGuire.

Filming began on the new show started in late October 2019, however, the show has suffered from multiple issues including the shows creator, Terri Minsky,  stepping away from her role as the showrunner on the show in January after the first two episodes were filmed in New York.

This led to Hilary Duff publically calling out Disney, asking them to move it to Hulu because “I’d be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30-year-old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating.”

Filming was put on hold while Hilary Duff went on a Honeymoon and then the coronavirus hit, causing everything to completely shutdown.  During this time, the team behind the show held virtual zoom meetings to get the show back on track.

In July, she told Cosmopolitan.

“Obviously, I have felt love for that character and I feel particularly dedicated to the fans about making the exact show that it should be. So you know, we started shooting, we stopped shooting and went back to the drawing board with Disney+, Disney, and myself to come up with something that works for all of us, and we’re still in the middle of that process.”

This past weekend, Hilary Duff announced on social media that she is pregnant with her third child, which will probably result in even more delays since it will limit when she is available to film the new Lizzie McGuire show.

Currently, the star is on set in New York filming the seventh and final season of  “Younger”.  Though with both series being filmed in New York, it might still be possible for her to finish shooting the series before she takes time off to have her new baby.    However, it’s also possible that the series will conitnue to be on pause until she returns to work after the baby is born.

Disney hasn’t provided an update on when the new series of Lizzie McGuire will arrive on Disney+, but hopefully, we will get to see the new Lizzie McGuire series at some point.

Until then, previous seasons of the show are available on Disney+.
