Earlier this week, it was revealed that Hulu has cancelled the previously announced Marvel live action series, Ghost Rider.  This series was being created by Marvel Television, which is also behind a number of other cancelled shows such as The Inhumans, New Warriors, Agent Carter, The Gifted, Daredevil, Iron Fist, in addition to The Runaways, Agents of Shield, Cloak & Dagger and more.

But things are changing at Marvel, with a wave of new series heading to Disney+ in the next few years, including Hawkeye, Loki, WandaVision, What If, Falcon & The Winter Soldier, She-Hulk, Ms Marvel and Moonknight.   All of which are being created by Marvel Studios, who create all the big screen offerings.

This means that these Disney+ shows are all a major part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, rather than just an offshoot, which makes random references to the “event” in New York (from the Avengers movie) or the odd name drop.

The cancellation of the new Ghost Rider series, just months after it was announced, has led many of Variety’s industry sources to believe that Marvel live-action productions will be mostly if not completely moved away from Marvel Television.

“Feige’s shows are so far beyond anything Marvel TV has been able to do.  He has access to all of these MCU characters that the other Marvel live-action stuff just doesn’t, not to mention way bigger budgets.”

But the budgets for the Disney+ shows are much higher as Marvel Studios want them to still look like their big screen counterparts.  Currently Marvel movies have a budget between $100 and $150 million, where as Variety reported back in 2004 that the first season of the Marvel Netflix shows had a combined budget of $200 million.

There are a number of shows in development by Marvel Television, which look to include Helstrom, Runaways and Cloak & Dagger.

But it looks like Marvel Television’s future is more focused on animated shows, including Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and the upcoming adult oriented shows such as “Howard the the Duck,” “MODOK,” “Hit-Monkey,” and “Tigra and Dazzler.”  These will all lead up to a “crossover” series,  “The Offenders”.

Marvel Television has had a bumpy ride since its creation in 2015, its had some big hits but a few misses.  While the majority of the series were supposed to be part of the bigger MCU, they always felt separate, with no impact on the movies.  Whereas the new Disney+ series are set to be directly connected to the movies.

It does look like Disney+ is going to have a big impact on the Marvel Television division, but what do you think?
