The Walt Disney Animation Studio decides to go old school with its 2013 Mickey Mouse short, “Get A Horse!” What looks like it’s going to be an old black and white short like when Mickey Mouse debuted quickly crosses over into a more modern style of animation when Mickey is thrown through the screen and into what would’ve been today back in 2013. Then, he must find a way to get back into the screen to save Minnie Mouse from the clutches of the diabolical Pete.

This is a really cool transition between the black and white and the colorful animation. I love the old black and white Mickey Mouse shorts available on the service right now, so anything that adds to those, even temporarily, is okay with me. It’s a very nice homage to Mickey’s beginnings while giving us a look at what was current when this was made. Plus, it’s cool to see the short mimic breaking the fourth wall as Mickey, Minnie, Pete, the horse and others move between the black and white animation and the colorful animation. Plus, it’s great to see Mickey find his way back to save Minnie and Pete get stuck in an awkward position as our heroes ride off into the sunset.

On top of the wonder of the animation style in this short, it’s a genuinely funny short. No, it doesn’t break any new ground. It’s very similar to a lot of shorts featuring Mickey Mouse over the years, especially ones where he has to save Minnie or where Pete shows up. But, sometimes going back to what works it’s exactly what’s needed. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a short like that, even though I know the company probably made hundreds, if not thousands, of them. But, when you get a way from it for a while, it can still feel fresh, even when it’s not.

I love Mickey Mouse shorts whether they are old or new and I love how this one manages to look like both. It’s familiar while feeling fresh. It was exactly what I needed to see at the time I sat down to watch it. I wanted something new to me that still felt classic and this short delivered. I hope to see more Mickey Mouse shorts like this one in the future.
