Disney is bringing back many well known 20th Century Studios franchises for new movies and shows on Disney+, with movies based on “Night At The Museum”, “Diary Of A Wimpy Kid”, “Ice Age” and others announced during last weeks Investor Day event.

However, Disney isn’t going to be stopping there, as according to GiantFreakingRobot, FireFly is also in early development of a brand new series for Disney+ based on “Firefly”.

The original show from 2002 is set in the year 2517, after the arrival of humans in a new star system, follow the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a “Firefly-class” spaceship.   The series was cancelled after 14 episodes in 2002, but it gained such a fan following it spawned a follow-up movie called “Serenity”.

The new Disney+ show would be a reboot of the franchise and introduce Captain Mal Reynolds and his crew aboard the Serenity in order to make this a long-running series on Disney+.   The series will become more family-friendly in the process, with it being toned down to a PG rating, so more people can watch it.  This also might result in some changes to well-known characters like Inara.

Due to the multiple controversies surrounding the shows creator, Joss Whedon and his work on the “Justice League” movie, it’s unlikely he would be returning to work on the series.

With Disney focusing its efforts on its streaming platforms as movie theatres struggle to deal with a change in viewer habits, Disney is looking for popular content for Disney+.

Earlier this year there was a survey going to selected Disney+ subscribers, about some legacy content being added to Disney+, which included Firefly.    During the Investor Day event, Disney announced a wide selection of mature general entertainment content would be coming to Disney+ under it’s new “Star” banner in Canada, Australia, Europe and other regions.  The original Firefly series was shown in the slideshow as one of the properties coming to Disney+ in February in those international markets.

Would you like to see a reboot of “Firefly” on Disney+?

Yes, but what about an animated continuation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer based on the Season 8-12 comics? With the original cast returning as VAs? Can we get that too?

It was already fairly family friendly. Make it more so, and you lose an awful lot.. please involve Joss Whedon. This was his baby. No Joss. No Firefly. If you are going to do it, do it right.

Huge HUGE Fan of the show. Own all the BluRays and the excellent Firefly board game from GaleForce nine. But this dumbed-down, toned-down idea is a steaming pile of a bad idea. Seriously, this sounds like Disney+ isn't even learning from their own success: Ironman was LESS family friendly in the movies than he was in the comic books, and was a tremendous success.
