The latest US drama series to head to Disney+ as a Star Original is “Filthy Rich”, which is based on the New Zealand series of the same name.

“Filthy Rich,” tells the story of the aftermath of a plane crash that kills the patriarch of a mega-rich Southern family, that is famed for creating a wildly successful Christian television network. After his alleged death, his wife and family are stunned to learn that he fathered three illegitimate children, all of whom are written into his will, threatening their family name and fortune.

The series stars Kim Cattrall, Gerald McRaney, Aubrey Dollar, Corey Cott, Benjamin Aguilar, Mark L. Young, Melia Kreiling, Steve Harris, David Denman and Olivia Macklin.

As you would expect, the first episode in a new series, it’s all about framing the story.  Getting us viewers set up with what the situation is, who everybody is, pigeon-holing every character into a stereotype so we can instantly get up to speed.   We have Kim Cattrall’s character, Margaret Monreaux, who plays an overbearing mother that is more worried about her reputation and keeping the brand going.   For someone, who’s whole life is about being morally right, she doesn’t act like it.  Each of the children has their own issues. The son wants to lead the business but is being blocked, the daughter is just an afterthought, and she wants to step out on her own as a fashion designer.  Then there are the illegitimate children; one is like her father, the other two just want to take the money and go.

Unfortunately, this series was cancelled by Fox after only a few episodes had aired due to low rating, and this ultimately does lead to some issues.  This is the third Star Original to have been cancelled before it’s even arrived in the UK, and it’s disheartening to see Disney+ being fed some of these failed series.  While it’s great that Disney’s Television Studios are trying out new shows and trying to do something original, it’s just not a great representation of “Star Originals” when 3 out of the 7 new series were dead on arrival.

With so many other great series available on Disney+, it’s a hard series to recommend to anyone to get into.  I’ve enjoyed watching both “neXt” and “Helstrom” on Disney+, but knowing those shows have already been cancelled, does mean I’m less invested and so I watch them mid-week once I’ve watched everything else.   It’s nice having some different types of drama series available on Disney+ each Friday and I hope this show finds an audience.

“Filthy Rich” is an interesting concept, but I just couldn’t connect with any of the characters, so I just didn’t care who kept the money.  The series just felt full of clichés.  The series’s religious aspects just turned me off the show even more, and I really struggled to watch Kim Cattrall playing the southern bell, as it just felt so stereotypical.   I’m really not sure how this series will go down with British audiences, we already have such an incredible lineup of soap operas every single night of the week, and this just isn’t on that same level as the American classics like “Dallas” or “Dynasty”.  For me, it’s not a series I’m going to be returning to, but as with anything on Disney+, give the first episode a whirl to see if you like it.

Rating 2 out of 5.
