After a great first season, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is finally back in action! In today’s episode, audiences were treated to a brand-new song – “Even When/The Best Part” – sung by characters Ricky (Joshua Bassett) and Nini (Olivia Rodrigo).
Since the show premiered in 2019, both Bassett and Rodrigo have gained wild popularity, so it has been interesting to see how their season 2 songs compare to season 1.
From the first lines of this song, it is obvious that their voices have matured, and Bassett’s low notes are a nice change of pace. While we hear parts of both “Even When” and “The Best Part” separately in the early parts of the episode, the story ends with both of them singing their songs together. This track has a nice “back-and-forth” style of lyrics, and it is amazing to hear how well the two songs blend together.
Some have even compared “Even When/The Best Part” to the tune “Wouldn’t Change a Thing” from Camp Rock, and it is easy to find the parallel between Bassett’s/Rodrigo’s performance and the duet of Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas. As compared to some other Disney Channel originals like Camp Rock, though, this song does not seem to rely too heavily on the use of autotune, allowing Bassett and Rodrigo to have a more natural vocal performance.
All in all, it is obvious that the songs from Season 2 have already stepped up the game from the show’s first season. Joshua Bassett and Olivia Rodrigo are finding their perfect vocal ranges, and songs like this help to further emphasize their instant vocal blending.
