Over the past couple of years, Disney has been closing down traditional television channels around the world, as it focuses its attention on building its streaming services.

While most of the focus has been on closing international channels across Europe, Latin America, Asia and Pacific regions, now the axe is starting to swing towards the US channels.

Disney will be closing ESPN Classic on January 1st 2022.

The channel has been running for over 30 years, when it was originally founded as the Classic Sports Network in 1995, before being acquired by ESPN in 1997. ESPN Classics aired documentaries and classic sports events, it was also often used as an overspill channel for live sports when required.

This continues the trend of Disney closing down less popular channels and focusing on its streaming services including ESPN+.

ESPN Classic won’t be the only sports channel to close down next year, NBC is also going to be closing down its Sport Network channel the day before.

What do you think of Disney closing down EPSN Classic?
