Following the success of Disney’s “Jungle Cruise” in cinemas and on Disney+ Premier Access, which recently passed $100 million at the domestic box office, Disney has confirmed that a sequel has been greenlight.

The new film will see both Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt return for another adventure as the riverboat captain Frank Wolff and explorer Dr. Lily Houghton.

It’s also expected that the film’s director Jaume Collet-Serra will also return, along with executive producer Scott Sheldon and producers John Davis, John Fox, Beau Flynn, Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia.   The sequel will be written by Michael Green, who co-wrote “Jungle Cruise” with Glenn Ficarra and John Requa.

The film was released in cinemas and on Disney+ Premier Access in late July, pulling in over $30M in consumer spend globally on the opening weekend on Disney+ Premier Access.

In the film, which is based on the classic Disney theme park attraction, we go on a rollicking thrill-ride down the Amazon with wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff and intrepid researcher Dr. Lily Houghton. Lily travels from London, England, to the Amazon jungle and enlists Frank’s questionable services to guide her downriver on La Quila—his ramshackle-but-charming boat. Lily is determined to uncover an ancient tree with unparalleled healing abilities—possessing the power to change the future of medicine. Thrust on this epic quest together, the unlikely duo encounters innumerable dangers and supernatural forces, all lurking in the deceptive beauty of the lush rainforest. But as the secrets of the lost tree unfold, the stakes reach even higher for Lily and Frank and their fate—and mankind’s—hangs in the balance.

Dwayne Johnson took to social media and confirmed that “Jungle Cruise” is returning for a second film.
