The growth of Disney+ internationally continues to impact traditional TV channels as its been revealed that 18 Disney owned TV channels will be closing down across South East Asia, including Singapore and Hong Kong.  These closures will begin from 1st October 2021.

The following channels will be closing down:

  • Fox
  • Fox Crime
  • Fox Life
  • FX
  • Fox Action Movies
  • Fox Family Movies
  • Fox Movies
  • Star Movies China
  • Fox Sports
  • Fox Sports 2
  • Fox Sports 3
  • Star Sports
  • Star Sports 2
  • Disney Channel
  • Disney Junior
  • Nat Geo People
  • SCM Legend

Only four channels will remain available:


  • Star Chinese Channel
  • Star Chinese Movies
  • National Geographic Channel
  • Nat Geo Wild.

In a statement to employees, Disney said: ‘As part of The Walt Disney Company’s global effort to pivot towards a DTC first model and further grow our streaming services, the company is consolidating its Media Networks business primarily in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong. These efforts will help us align our resources more efficiently and effectively to current and future business needs.’

Disney+ launched in Singapore in February and is set to launch in more countries later this year, including Hong Kong and South Korea.  Disney hasn’t yet announced when Disney+ will be launching in other countries these regions such as Thailand or Malaysia.


The addition of the general entertainment brand Star, has allowed Disney to offer more mature content, and in some other countries, including India and Indonesia, Disney+ Hotstar operates with a mixture of different content.

 

This news follows what’s happened in other countries across Europe and Australasia, with Disney Channels closing, and it’s expected more will follow.

    Well, that's the end, the end of nearly two decades of channels in the region where STAR brand was originated (Hong Kong) and the end of Disney channels in Southeast Asia.
