Following the successful launch of Disney+ last week, Disney’s direct-to-consumer chairman Kevin Mayer recently spoke at Recode’s Code Media conference in Los Angeles and was asked about having more content for “grown-ups”.

Since if you are looking for more content like “The Mandalorian”, there isn’t a huge amount on Disney+ at the moment.  While there is a large selection of more adult themed content from National Geographic, the vast majority of content available, is from the Disney Channel.

When asked about “grown-up” content, Kevin Mayer said:

“We are adding more stuff that’s aimed at grown-ups.  It takes lead time to create really high-quality original programming. We have them coming on in a cadence we think it is the right cadence that we can make sure it’s high-quality. We don’t want to rush things through just to have volume, that’s not our philosophy. We want to do fewer things better.”

There is a wide range of new shows coming to Disney+, including new Star Wars shows such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, A Rogue One Prequel and another series of the Mandalorian, plus there will be lots of new Marvel shows like Hawkeye, She-Hulk, Ms Marvel, Moon Knight, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki and Wandavision.  But these are available yet.

Shows like Encore and “The World According To Jeff Goldblum” are aimed at adults, but it does look like the majority of more “adult” themed content will be created for its Hulu streaming platform, which will soon include the vast FX back catalog and new FX made Hulu Originals.  In addition to rated R movies from Disney’s 20th Century Fox, Searchlight and Touchstone brands.

Both Disney CEO Bob Iger and Kevin Mayer have said in the past that Disney+ is not just for kids, but the launch lineup is very kid focused.

Shouldn't the Fox X-Men movies be on Disney plus? Aren't there other PG or PG-13 Fox movies that could be available? Or are they tied up in other streaming agreements? The original content plan looks awesome, the upcoming Star Wars and Marvel shows will be phenomenal. It'll be slow to get them, but I'd much prefer quality to quantity. Perhaps they could consider creating some cheaper rom-coms for adults (Hallmark movies!) Or maybe non-cheesy suspense or espionage movies. Disney has a lot of genres covered in their vault, but most of them are so cheesy that adults can cringe when watching them. Anyway, I'm good with Hulu having the majority of "adult" content. Disney has a great nitch thing going on here and a great quality future slate. Hopefully they'll continue to invest heavily in that future line up, including new original animated shows.

I gotta agree. We probably need them as well just in case they want to add them in.
