Earlier this year, Disney CEO Bob Chapek announced that the Walt Disney Company would be launching a new streaming service called “Star” internationally, rather than Hulu.   With “Star” including general entertainment movies and shows from its brands such as ABC, FX, Freeform, Searchlight Pictures and 20th Century Studios.   He stated that it would be “fully integrated into our established Disney+ platform from both a marketing and a technology perspective”.

With the basic premise being that “Star” will have the more mature content that wouldn’t be suitable on Disney+, with franchises such as Deadpool, Aliens, Predator, Die Hard, along with ABC shows like Grey’s Anatomy and FX shows like Fargo.   Unlike Hulu, it wouldn’t offer live TV and would only contain content owned by Disney.

In September, Disney’s Chief Financial Officer, Christine McCarthy, said in multiple interviews that “Star” would be rolled out differently in different countries.  Disney has already rebranded Hotstar in India to Disney+ Hotstar, which offers a tiered system with more mature content and Disney+ Hotstar also recently launched in Indonesia .  And there has been much discussion over Disney+ offering more mature content within its app.

Recently, social media accounts on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter have been opened for Disney Plus Star, with both Twitter and Instagram accounts being verified.  Which means they are unlikely to be created by anyone since the verification badge is many used by big brands or celebrities.  Before Disney+ launched, several social media accounts were created but kept private until the accounts were officially launched.

Here is a look at the new social media accounts:

These social media accounts clearly show that Disney+ Star is coming soon and will offer much more mature content, all within one app, however, this is likely to increase in price or an optional add-on.    It would also mean Disney+ Star is a more complete package, offering all of Disney’s own content in one place, making it a much bigger threat to Netflix.

It isn’t yet clear where Disney+ Star would be launching, but it could launch anywhere outside of the US and Japan, leaving it wide open to launch in countries that already have Disney+ such as Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America or across Europe.

More details on Disney’s streaming plans for “Star” will be announced at their Investor Day event on December 10th.

But what do you think Disney+ Star is going to be?

"What do you think Disney+ Star is going to be?" I believe you already told us. It is most likely going to be a watered down Hulu knock off. It will have no original content, no 3rd party content, no live TV, and maybe some Indian Hotstar stuff. Seriously, why is Disney+ trying to avoid Hulu all of a sudden? And why is this Star thing trying to be Disney+? I don't think these guys understand how streaming media works. Disney+ is aimed at children and families, while Netflix and Hulu are aimed to the general public. Disney CANNOT do the same thing twice with Star. General public streaming media needs 3rd party content in order to generate revenue and potential customers. Otherwise, Netflix probably wouldn't be a worldwide business like today. Sorry, but I don't think that I will be using Star in any way whatsoever. Australia wanted Hulu, but isn't because the house of Mouse is currently having a fallout with the... uh, tree of Woodpecker? (Does that sound right?) Guess what else? I bet once the sale of Hulu in 2024 comes around, Disney will end Hulu in Japan and America so they can replace it with Star. And all the Hulu Originals will be on Netflix or Amazon TV, or Apple TV+. THE END!

LOL! Buddy have you understood what they said earlier. They are going to create original content respective to each market, which essentially means thirdparty content. They said they are not going to License thirdparty content Internationally because there is no need to do that. Have you checked how Disney+ Hotstar worked in Indonesia? It doesn't focus of Indian content, but rather than local content. They have 300+ Indonesian Titles in the library and they have premiered 13 Indonesian original titles in the last 3 months. Yes, Indian content is there as there is Indian dispora there as well. Indian Disney+ Hotstar without having most of the abc studios stuff has the most amazing content library as most of the show's from FX, Fox Television Studios are available for the people which is boosted by HBO Original content. Your analysis is not anywhere close to what they are gonna be doing. Star India is anyway trying to expand Their Hotstar presence on the back of Cricket, Disney is taking that advantage as they don't want to spend a fortune on Hulu International rollout only to payout huge chuck again TO Comcast

The fact is you have no clue what you are saying. Stick to Debtflix and call it a day. Mate. No original content on Star? All those brands (FX, Freeform, ABC, Fox, etc) will be creating content for the service as well as there being new content creation in local areas. Whatever new content they own/create for Hulu will very likely be on Star internationally. There will be no licensed content. like say from NBCUniversal on Hulu, which is smart business.

My biggest question is how the apps are integrated in the US? Will there be a Hulu tab in the Disney + app as some rumors have suggested, or just access to 'some' of the bigger/more mature Fox IP (which is shared with Hulu) that would specifically work better for the 4 quadrant Disney + customer (Die Hard, Alien, Deadpool, etc)

I originally thought they will rollout Hotstar App(Developed by Novi @ Star India) where they are going to launch Disney+ Hotstar /Disney+ Star or whatever they end up calling it. Now it seems thats not the way its paning out it seems. Anyway, particularly on Disney+ Hotstar there is no restrictions as such. They just have Disney+ Hub integrated to the Hotstar app, resembling Disney+. Now I think they may do the same to Star on Disney+ as well by just creating a hub.

Worst decision ever. Everything should be only on Disney +
