Amazon has announced that it has secured a short-term film licensing agreement with Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution for a limited selection of 20th Century Studios titles such as Deadpool, Deadpool 2, Logan, Hidden Figures, Murder on the Orient Express, and The Post, which will be available to customers on the free streaming service, Amazon Freevee.

Amazon Freevee is a free streaming service that was previously called IMDb TV.  Amazon Freevee is currently available as an app on Fire TV, Roku, Android TV, Google TV, Samsung smart TVs (TV models 2017-2021), LG smart TVs (TV models 2018+), Comcast Xfinity X-Class and Flex, Microsoft Xbox One and Series X/S, Sony PlayStation 4, Sony PlayStation 5, iPhone, iPad, Android mobile phones, and Fire Tablets.

You can also watch the Amazon Freevee channel with the Prime Video app on smart TVs, mobile devices, Fire tablet, Echo screen devices, other major streaming devices. A Prime Video subscription isn’t required to access Amazon Freevee within the Prime Video app. Amazon Freevee is only available on devices that support Ad-Supported channels.

No other details have been provided on how long this contract is for, and since these films are being released on a free streaming service, this is likely a non-exclusive deal, meaning Disney can use these films on their own streaming services like Disney+ or Hulu.

With Disney no longer licensing out its films to other streaming services like Netflix, it has reduced the amount of income it can make from its content.  So signing short-term non-exclusive deals with free platforms, means Disney can make more money off its content, without it interfering with its own streaming services.

What do you think of Disney licensing content to Amazon Freevee?
