Disney Removes All Content From Stan Ahead Of Australia’s Disney+ Launch
With the release of Disney+ in Australia just hours away, Disney has now pulled of its content off the Australian streaming service, Stan, which is run by channel Nine.
Last year, Disney announced a short term deal with Stan, to bring lots of its content to the streaming service, with much talk of Disney either buying out Stan or keeping a deal in place. However nothing came of that talk, since Disney continued its plan to roll out Disney+ across the globe.
Disney content was heavily promoted as being a major reason for Australians to subscribe, though recently Stan CEO Mike Sneesby spoke on the Screen Australia podcast:
“Disney has fantastic content. The brand and franchises on Stan have performed very well, but in the broader scheme of things, they are one in about 100 of our important distributors of first-run content. In that over 1.7m, only a very small proportion of that base are largely Disney watching. None only watch Disney. It’s a phenomenal brand, phenomenal content, but for us it’s part of a much broader content lineup.”
Disney+ launches on Tuesday 19th November in Australia and New Zealand.
