Disney has announced that it is putting the price up on its ESPN+ streaming platform for new customers.  It will be rising from $4.99 a month, to $5.99 from August 12th.  This is the first price hike for the sports streaming service in two years.  The annual package won’t be increasing in price, as it will stay at $49.99 for a year’s access.

Existing monthly subscribers will continue to pay $4.99 monthly for at least the next 12 months, although it is important to note that this is subject to change.

The Disney Streaming Bundle, which consists of Disney+, Hulu with commercials and ESPN+ won’t see a price rise, so will stay at $12.99 a month.

This price rise is an obvious way of raising additional revenue, but it also makes it more likely that fans will purchase an annual subscription or take out the Disney Streaming Bundle.  Since this helps reduce the churn of monthly subscribers leaving.

Programming on ESPN+ includes exclusive UFC and Top Rank boxing events, thousands of college sports events (including football and basketball) from more than a dozen sports at 20 conferences, hundreds of MLB and NHL games, top domestic and international soccer (Serie A, MLS, FA Cup, Bundesliga – beginning in 2020, EFL Championship and Carabao Cup, Eredivisie), Grand Slam tennis, international and domestic rugby and cricket, exclusive ESPN+ Original series and acclaimed studio shows (such as NFL PrimeTime, ESPN FC, Peyton’s Places, Detail, More Than an Athlete, SneakerCenter and more) and the full library of ESPN’s award-winning 30 for 30 films.

What do you think of this price hike for ESPN+?
