Disney has announced details on the expansion of Disney+ in Japan, which will be getting the general entertainment brand, Star, on October 27th 2021.

Disney+ has already launched in Japan, but was in a limited capacity as it was a replacement for Disney Deluxe and launched with NTT Docomo.

The addition of Star will bring thousands of new titles including latest movies, originals, and Japanese content.  New content will be coming from Disney Television Studios, ABC Signature and 20th Television, FX Productions, 20th Century Studios, Searchlight Pictures and more.

Japan will also be getting original content created for Japanese subscribers.

Carol Choi, President and CEO of Walt Disney Japan Co., Ltd., said in a statement:

“We are pleased to add a new content brand, Star, to expand the entertainment experience Disney + delivers to Japanese consumers. Japan is the first market to offer Disney Plus in North Asia. It is an important market for Disney in the future. Disney Plus, which was delivered together with NTT Docomo Co., Ltd., has been highly evaluated by Japanese consumers. With the addition of stars, it has an unprecedented range. In addition to adding general entertainment content with depth to the lineup, we will deliver local content created in cooperation with top Japanese creators. ”

Some highlights of shows and movies heading to Disney+ in Japan include:

  • Pretty Woman
  • Titanic
  • Deadpool
  • Devil In Prada
  • 24
  • The Walking Dead
  • 911
  • Glee
  • Love Victor
  • Only Murders In The Building

New titles currently in develop include series by FX like “Shogun” and “Aliens”.   Along with new Disney+ Originals “Home Sweet Home Alone” and “The Book Of Boba Fett”.

With the expansion of Star, Disney+ will be available on new supported platforms including game consoles, smartphones, tablets, PCs, smart TVs, and streaming devices.

In addition, Disney will expand the enrollment routes that enhance consumer convenience. In addition to the existing membership through docomo Shop and My docomo, you can also join from the WEB with a credit card or PayPal, the Apple App Store, the Google Play Store, and the Amazon App Store. Disney Plus is a flat rate system of 990 yen (tax included) per month, and if you enroll via the Apple App Store, it will be 1,000 yen (tax included) per month. If you join from a docomo shop or My docomo, the new price of 990 yen (tax included) per month will be applied from November 1st.

Earlier this year, Disney added Star to Disney+ in many countries including the U.K., Singapore, Canada, Australia and many more.
