Disney and WarnerMedia have made an interesting deal to speed up when 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures films can head to Disney+ and Hulu in the United States.

According to Variety, HBO Max will continue to get access to all of 20th Century Studios films until the end of 2022. But, now a selection of titles will now be shared with Disney+ and Hulu. HBO/HBO Max will retain pay-one TV window exclusivity on approximately half of the slate through 2022.

The first title that will be shared between HBO Max and Disney+ will be “Ron’s Gone Wrong”, which will arrive on Wednesday 15th December.

20th Century Fox originally made the ten-year contract in 2012 and it was due to expire at some

This will mean Disney+ and Hulu will get access to some major new films like “West Side Story” much quicker. Though mature titles are still likely to be released on Hulu instead of Disney+.

In addition, Disney agreed to accelerate the start of the pay-one window for the 20th Century Studios films on HBO/HBO Max, while still honouring the previously announced exclusive theatrical windows. WarnerMedia and Disney also have ad-placement rights within select Fox films for their direct-to-consumer services (HBO Max With Ads and Hulu) after an ad-free window.

This means HBO Max customers will get films much quicker and also open up Disney+/Hulu to taking advantage of its new slate of films.

Disney isn’t expected to renew this contract with WarnerMedia, but it does provide both platforms with new content, much faster.

Internationally, 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Films are exclusive to Disney+ after their theatrical windows.
