Disney Executive Unsure Of “The Great North” Future
Earlier this year, it was announced that FOX had renewed four of the hit animated shows from 20th Television Animation, including “The Simpsons”, “Family Guy”, “Bob’s Burgers” and “American Dad” for four more seasons.
However, it hasn’t yet been confirmed if the animated series, “The Great North” will be returning for a sixth season. The show currently airs on the FOX linear channel in the United States, before becoming available via Hulu and Hulu On Disney+. Internationally, the show is also released exclusively on Disney+.
The series follows the Alaskan adventures of the Tobin family, as a single dad, Beef, does his best to keep his weird bunch of kids close – especially his only daughter, Judy, whose artistic dreams lead her away from the family fishing boat and into the glamorous world of the local mall. Rounding out the family are Judy’s older brother, Wolf, and his fiancé, Honeybee, her middle brother, Ham, and ten-year-old-going-on-fifty little brother, Moon. While their mother is not in the picture, Judy seeks guidance from her new boss, Alyson, and her imaginary friend, Alanis Morissette, who appears to her in the northern lights.
During a recent interview, Disney Television Group president Eric Schrier was asked about the future of “The Great North”, where he stated:
It’s still under consideration. I don’t think Fox has made a final determination on it; it’s another show that we really love. It’d be great for it to continue, but I understand if they’re not able to.
Eric was then asked if the show could possibly move to Hulu, should FOX decide not to renew it for a fifth season, to which he replied:
I’d have to look at the performance, I haven’t looked at that recently, and I’d have to talk to the partners I have at Hulu about it, we’d have to see if it makes sense. We like the current relationship but ultimately, the core shows are these four core shows.
Roger’s Take: Personally, it feels with FOX making a deal for four of the biggest and most popular shows, it kinda feels like “The Great North” is the least popular of their animated lineup and that will likely be the end of the show. Ultimately, FOX didn’t think it was worth renewing, likely down to it not pulling in enough viewers. So, Disney will have to take a good, hard look at the viewership data from Hulu and hopefully, Disney+ internationally (it does feel like sometimes the global audience never gets considered!), before making a decision, but I think it’s likely finished once this current season wraps up later this summer, but they are unlikely to confirm this until after the season finale has aired.
