With the current pandemic still causing problems globally for theatrical releases, Disney has announced a number of changes to its theatrical release schedule for a number of films.
“Free Guy” on August 13, 2021 (from May 21, 2021)
Marvel’s“ Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” on September 3, 2021 (from July 9, 2021)
“The King’s Man” on December 22, 2021 (from August 20, 2021)
“Deep Water” on January 14, 2022 (from August 13, 2021)
“Death on the Nile” on February 11, 2022 (from September 17, 2021)
Today’s announcement reflects our focus on providing consumer choice and serving the evolving preferences of audiences. By leveraging a flexible distribution strategy in a dynamic marketplace that is beginning to recover from the global pandemic, we will continue to employ the best options to deliver The Walt Disney Company’s unparalleled storytelling to fans and families around the world,” said Kareem Daniel, Chairman, Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution, in a statement.
Disney has also announced that “Black Widow” will be delayed to July 9th and will be also released on Disney+ Premier Access.
“Cruella” will also be available on Disney+ Premier Access on the same day as it hits cinemas on May 28th.
And “Luca” will no longer be coming to cinemas and instead will be coming directly to Disney+.
While more people are being vaccinated and people are returning to cinemas slowly, there is still social distancing in place and some countries including many in Europe, still have cinemas closed, so Disney has pushed most of its films away 6 months, with it’s summer movies also utilising Disney+.
