Following the global box office success of Marvel Studios “Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings”, it’s being reported by Movie Insider Matthew Belloni’s What I’m Hearing newsletter that Disney C.E.O. Bob Chapek and distribution chief Kareem Daniels have decided that “Eternals” will be releasing exclusively in theatres on Friday 5th November.
While nothing has been officially announced, the film will not be available on Disney+ Premier Access.
This shouldn’t be a huge surprise, considering the success of “Shang-Chi”, which broke Labor Day box office records and shattered expectations. Had the film performed badly, the use of Disney+ Premier Access would have been more appealing for a hybrid release.
Originally, “Eternals” was going to be released in cinemas last November, but was delayed a year due to the pandemic. Whereas with “Free Guy” and “Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Ring”, which had a 45-day exclusivity with theatres, Disney hasn’t announced any new long term plans on how it will release films, stating they are making decisions based on a film by basis. Disney is releasing several films exclusively in theatres this Fall, including “The Last Duel” and “Ron’s Gone Wrong”, which will all help provide more data on how the box office is recovering. And both “Free Guy” and “Shang-Chi” are considered experiments for their releases, so it’s difficult to determine exactly when new films will be heading to Disney+ after their theatrical release.
Earlier this year, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige told Variety.
“I think a theater would be my preference and [Eternals director] Chloe [Zhao’s] preference”
Marvel Studios’ “Eternals” welcomes an exciting new team of Super-Heroes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The epic story, spanning thousands of years, features a group of immortal heroes forced out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s oldest enemy, The Deviants.
The outstanding ensemble cast includes Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Kumail Nanjiani as cosmic-powered Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak, Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, Barry Keoghan as aloof loner Druig, and Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena. Kit Harington plays Dane Whitman. “Eternals” is directed by Chloé Zhao, who won an Oscar earlier this year for Searchlight Picture’s “Nomadland”.
What do you think of Disney keeping “Eternals” as a theatrical release only?
