We are back with yet another Disney+ Battle as we compare two classic films in the Disney+ library. This week, it’s a battle between the very first Pixar film and the most recent Pixar film to be released as we compare “Toy Story” and “Luca.” Let the battle begin!

1. PROTAGONIST

“Toy Story” is a rare film with two protagonists, Woody the Cowboy and Buzz Lightyear. Their, at first, contentious relationship leads them to be separated form the rest of their toy friends and have to find a way back to Andy. Along the way, they turn from rivals to friends. Meanwhile, the main character of “Luca” is Luca, a sea monster who has snuck to the surface due to his friendship with Alberto. Both are stories about two friends. In “Toy Story,” Woody and Buzz become friends over time, while in “Luca,” Luca and Alberto quickly become friends. I think Woody and Buzz are more iconic. Point to “Toy Story.”

2. ANTAGONIST

The main antagonist of “Toy Story” is Sid, a young boy who likes to destroy toys. The toys in Andy’s room greatly fear Sid with good reason. He has taken toys apart and put different pieces with other toys leading to weird hybrids. The villain of “Luca” is Ercole, a boy who is competing in the same race as Luca and Alberto for the Vespa and hates sea monsters. He tries to lead the town against them when their true identities are discovered, but it turns out many of the people in the town are actually sea monsters in disguise as well. Both of these villains pose great threats to the antagonists, but Sid was actually going to blow up Buzz, so Sid is a little worse. Point to “Toy Story.”

3. SUPPORTING CHARACTERS

“Toy Story” features some of the most iconic supporting characters in Pixar history. Hamm, Mr. Potato Head, Slinky Dog, the army men and Bo Peep all stand out. Meanwhile, Alberto and Giulia serve as great friends to Luca, but none in “Luca” are as strong as those in “Toy Story.” Point to “Toy Story.”

4. MUSIC

“Toy Story” features the best song in the Pixar canon and one of the most recognizable songs in the Disney canon. “You Got A Friend In Me” is a song that almost everybody knows from being involved in all of the “Toy Story” films. Meanwhile, the score that Randy Newman wrote helps drive the plot very well, especially when Woody, Buzz and RC are trying to get back to the moving truck. “Luca” has a very good score as well, but none of the songs stick out. Point to “Toy Story.”

5. MEMORABLE MOMENTS

Here we are again at the most subjective of these categories. For me, the most memorable moments of “Toy Story” are: the toys worried about Andy’s birthday presents, Buzz’s arrival, Buzz “flying,” “You’re a sad, strange little man,” Pizza Planet, Sid, the toys breaking the rules, and falling with style. The most memorable parts of “Luca” are: Luca going to the surface, “Silencio Bruno,” Luca turning on Alberto, the Vespa race and Alberto and Luca saving each other and revealing all the sea monsters in the town. Point to “Toy Story.”

It’s a clean sweep for “Toy Story.” I can’t say I’m surprised. While “Luca” is a very enjoyable movie that I would recommend to anyone, it’s very difficult to go to battle against the juggernaut that is “Toy Story.” But, which do you think is better?
