We’re back with another Disney+ battle. This week, it’s a battle between a popular film from Disney’s First Dark Age of Animation against the final film of the Disney Renaissance. Let’s see who wins between “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” and “Tarzan.”

1. PROTAGONIST

The main characters of both of these films are in the names. Winnie the Pooh is a bear that loves honey and lives in the Hundred Acre Wood. His adventures tell the stories of his interactions with his friends. Tarzan is a man who was stranded in a jungle as a child and raised by apes. He meets Jane and helps her and her father while also saving the apes that raised him. Tarzan is the better protagonist. Point to “Tarzan.”

2. ANTAGONIST

There is no real antagonist in “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.” At times, Rabbit stands opposed to his friends but he’s more of a thorn in the side than a true villain. Meanwhile “Tarzan” has two antagonists. Sabor is the leopard who kills Kala and Kerchak’s child, as well as Tarzan’s parents. She is finally taken down 20 years later by Tarzan. Then, there’s Clayton, the hired gun for Jane and her father who turns on them and eventually dies in the jungle. Both are solid villains. Point to “Tarzan.”

3. SUPPORTING CHARACTERS

“The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” has a plethora of supporting characters. Kanga, Roo, Eeyore, Rabbit, Owl, Tigger and Christopher Robin all drive the plot almost as much as Pooh. In contrast, Tarzan’s supporting characters, while good, don’t measure up. Jane, Kerchak, Kala and others may hold their own against other films, but they fall short here. Point to “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.”

4. MUSIC

“The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” has a nice score that helps drive the film, but it has very little standout music. “Tarzan,” meanwhile, has one of the best soundtracks of the Disney canon. Phil Collins put some of his best work into this film. “You’ll Be In My Heart” is a true classic that stands the test of time. Point to “Tarzan.”

5. MEMORABLE MOMENTS

It’s time for the most subjective of all the categories. For me, the most memorable parts of “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” are Pooh getting stuck in Rabbit’s House, the “Most Wonderful Thing About Tiggers,” Eeyore giving Piglet’s house to Owl, Rabbit trying to get Tigger lost but then getting lost himself and needing Tigger to find him and the hero party. For “Tarzan,” the parts I remember most are “You’ll Be In My Heart,” “Trashing the Camp,” Tarzan meeting Jane and Tarzan beating Sabor. I think “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” is actually a more memorable film. Point to Pooh.

“Tarzan” wins this battle, but it was incredibly close. These are two great films in the Disney canon, and I hope you take the time to check them out if you haven’t already. But I want to know which film you think is better: “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” or “Tarzan?”
