After a year’s delay due to the pandemic, Disney is finally set to release its latest live-action action-adventure film “Jungle Cruise” on Disney+ Premier Access and in cinemas next week.
The film is set to be a rollicking thrill-ride down the Amazon with wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff and intrepid researcher Dr. Lily Houghton. Lily travels from London, England to the Amazon jungle and enlists Frank’s questionable services to guide her downriver on La Quila—his ramshackle-but-charming boat. Lily is determined to uncover an ancient tree with unparalleled healing abilities—possessing the power to change the future of medicine. Thrust on this epic quest together, the unlikely duo encounters innumerable dangers and supernatural forces, all lurking in the deceptive beauty of the lush rainforest. But as the secrets of the lost tree unfold, the stakes reach even higher for Lily and Frank and their fate—and mankind’s—hangs in the balance.
Disney has already received good feedback from test audiences for the film. They’re hoping that the film is a big enough success to warrant this film becoming a franchise, similar to how “Pirates Of The Caribbean”, since they are both based on classic Disney theme park attractions.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has so much faith in the new film that he wants to make a sequel and has been discussing bringing his co-star Emily Blunt into his circle of frequent collaborators, since they’ve so much on-screen chemistry together. This can be seen in the advertising campaign for the film, which sees them bouncing off one another in a jokey way, showing that they have a lot of fun when working together.
The likelihood of a “Jungle Cruise” sequel will ultimately come down to how successful the film is financially at the theatrical box office and on Disney+ Premier Access. The film also does have the added benefit of being built on an existing franchise, since the “Jungle Cruise” is one of the original attractions from Disneyland, so Disney can use the film to help boost the theme park attractions.
“Jungle Cruise” is coming to Disney+ Premier Access and to cinemas on Friday 30th July.
