With the start of a brand new month, it means Disney+ in the United States often loses access to a small number of films. Today, Disney has removed the Searchlight Pictures film “Bend It Like Beckham” from Disney+ in the United States.
The film tells the story of Jess Bhamra, who is the daughter of a strict Indian couple in London, is not permitted to play organized soccer, even though she is 18. When Jess is playing for fun one day, her impressive skills are seen by Jules Paxton, who then convinces Jess to play for her semi-pro team. Jess uses elaborate excuses to hide her matches from her family while also dealing with her romantic feelings for her coach, Joe.
It stars Parminder Nagra, Keira Knightley, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Anupam Kher, Juliet Stevenson, Shaznay Lewis and Archie Panjabi.
Unlike other streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, Disney+ doesn’t announce its removals in advance.
The removal has been done due to preexisting contracts that had been made before Disney purchased 20th Century Fox. The film is still available on Disney+ in other countries such as Canada, since Disney only has the North American distribution rights to the film.
“Bend It Like Beckham” will return to Disney+ in the future, once its contract expires.
