One of the most popular films on Disney+ at this time of the year is Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, an animated film released in 1993.

The film tells the story of Pumpkin King Jack Skellington, who is bored with the same old scare-and-scream routine. He longs to spread the joy of Christmas. But his merry mission puts Santa in jeopardy and creates a nightmare for good little boys and girls everywhere.

Over the years, there have been many reports of potential sequels, prequels or remakes of the classic animated film, but it’s certainly something Tim Burton doesn’t want to do.

Recently, during an interview with Empire magazine to celebrate the film’s 30th anniversary, Tim Burton revealed he has no interest in revisiting the characters again.

“To me the movie is very important.  I’ve done sequels, I’ve done other things, I’ve done reboots, I’ve done all that shit, right? I don’t want that to happen to this. It’s nice that people are maybe interested [in another one], but I’m not. I feel like that old guy who owns a little piece of property and won’t sell to the big power-plant that wants to take my land.  Get off of my land!  You pesky little…You ain’t getting this property! I don’t care what you want to build on it. You come on my property…Where’s my shotgun?”

Tim Burton also shared details on why Jack Skellington is so personal to him, as he explained that the

“character that’s perceived as dark, but is really light.  Those are the kinds of things that I love, whether it’s [Edward] Scissorhands or Batman, characters that have that. It represented all those feelings that I had. I was perceived as this dark character, when I didn’t feel that way. So it was a very personal character.”

While Disney would no doubt love a new instalment of “A Nightmare Before Christmas”, not just for Disney+ but in the huge amount of merchandise that is released every year, but at the same time, as Disney may have realised over the last few years, not everything needs to be remade or needs a sequel, and that leaving some franchises alone, is probably much safer than constantly trying to reinvent the wheel.
