After working on multiple Star Wars series, including “The Mandalorian”, “The Clone Wars”, and “Ahsoka”, it has been revealed by Vanity Fair that Dave Filoni has been promoted to the Chief Creative Officer of Lucasfilm.

In his role, he will work alongside Lucasfilm President, Kathleen Kennedy and will have much more input over the creative side of Star Wars.  He will be involved in the development process of new projects much earlier and in a much more expansive capacity.  Back in 2020, Dave Filoni was made EVP of Lucasfilm.

During the interview, he said:

“Now I’m what’s called chief creative officer of Lucasfilm. In the past, in a lot of projects I would be brought into it, I would see it after it had already developed a good ways.”

At this year’s Star Wars Celebration event in London, it was announced that he would be directing a brand new movie, which will bring together all of the events of the “Mandalorian”, “Skeleton Crew” and “Ahsoka”.  And now Dave’s new role will give him much more creative input, he explained:

“In the past, in a lot of projects I would be brought into it, I would see it after it had already developed a good ways.  In this new role, it’s opened up to basically everything that’s going on. When we’re planning the future of what we’re doing now, I’m involved at the inception phase.”

There are many other projects currently in development, including multiple Disney+ shows like “The Acolyte”, “Skeleton Crew” and the second season of “Andor”.  Plus, there are multiple films in development by Taika Waiti and Shawn Levy, with Daniel Glover working on a “Lando” film. Plus, there is a prequel film set thousands of years before “The Phantom Menace” by James Mangold and another film by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy that is set after the events of “Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker” and will see Daisy Ridley return as Rey.

With Dave Filoni now working as the CCO, this will hopefully lead to better films and shows, as Filoni said:

“To truly help filmmakers, it was really important for me to experience it firsthand.  I can also lend a perspective on the challenges that telling these stories will present. I feel more capable of actually being helpful outside of just saying, ‘Well, Jedi are like this, and Sith are like this…’”

However, he also explained that it doesn’t mean he’s controlling everything:

“I’m not telling people what to do, but I do feel I’m trying to help them tell the best story that they want to tell. I need to be a help across the galaxy here, like a part of a Jedi Council almost.”

Dave Filoni will continue working on his upcoming film and exploring a possible second season of “Ahsoka” while serving in his new position.

With Star Wars going through some issues over the last few years, with a focus on its Disney+ shows, while not being able to get any films off the ground, hopefully, with a new Chief Creative Officer, the story and creative side of Star Wars can improve, with someone that was taught by George Lucas and understands the characters so well.
