James Cameron Address Making A “Avatar” Disney+ Series
With 20th Century Studios’ latest film, “Avatar: The Way Of Water”, breaking box office records around the world and becoming the third highest-grossing film of all time, just behind the original film from 2009, it’s obvious that Disney will want to keep the franchise going.
Disney has already set out plans for three more sequels to arrive in cinemas in the next decade, but when asked about the chances of an “Avatar” Disney+ series, the film’s director, James Cameron, told Los Angeles Times,
“Right now, the economics don’t make sense to spin off any of our CG main characters onto TV. But the cost of these things will progressively come down as we introduce machine deep learning into the processes and make them more automated. Ask me again in five years.”
With the huge costs involved in creating the “Avatar” films, it’s no surprise that right now, especially with Disney trying to reduce costs by $3 billion, creating a Disney+ series probably isn’t high on the priority list. But also, with the film being so successful in cinemas and with three more films due to be released, the focus will be on keeping that on track.
James Cameron also explained that the theatre experience is something that isn’t going away, regardless of the growth of streaming services like Disney+.
“I don’t think it’s ever going to go away, ’cause it’s something specific. The deal we make to go and immerse ourselves without distraction, it’s like doing yoga or taking a walk in the forest for a couple of hours. There’s something about it I still think is sacred.”
Hopefully, as technology becomes cheaper, in the future, we might be able to explore the world of Pandora from the comfort of our own homes. In the meantime, we can still watch the original film on Disney+.
