A couple of years ago, it was revealed that Disney was in the early development of a new instalment in the “The Princess Diaries” franchise, and recently, it was revealed that the film was moving forward with Aadrita Mukerji (“Reacher” & “Supergirl” was writing the script.   The new film is going to be produced by Debra Martin Chase, who also produced the two previous “Princess Diaries” films. Melissa Stack, who previously worked on the 2020 Disney+ feature Godmothered, will be executive producing the film.   Anna Hathaway has not officially signed for the new film, had has expressed interest in being part of a new “Princess Diaries” movie for some time.

In the original film, teenager Mia Thermopolis, played by Anne Hathaway, who is just surviving each school day finds out some shocking news about the death of her long-absent father, and discovers that he was the prince of Genovia, making her a real-life princess. So begins a comical transformation towards poise and princess-ness, including a media storm, jealous schoolmates and a plot to take over her country.

Recently, Anne Hathaway, spoke with People at the Sundance Film Festival over the weekend and shared her excitement on a potential third film:

“We feel the exact same, and I know it’s probably very frustrating.  It’s a process that requires patience, and so everybody should consider themselves a part of the movie business now, because this is how long it actually takes to make things.”

Following the news of the third film moving along in development, Julie Andrews, who played Clarisse Renaldi, the Queen regent of Genovia in the Disney movie, has said during an interview with Access Hollywood, that her participation in the new film might not happen.

Back during an interview in October, Anne Hathaway told Entertainment Tonight that she wanted Julie Andrews back for a potential thirf film:

“If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.”

The first film was released in 2001 and was followed up by the second film in 2004. Both of which, are available on Disney+.
