It’s been almost ten years since one of the first live-action reimaginings of a classic Disney animated film hit our screens when Angelina Jolietook on the role of Maleficent in an alternative version of “Sleeping Beauty”.

“Maleficent” explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever.

The film was a huge success, pulling in over $758 million at the global box office, and a second film, “Malifecent: Mistress Of Evil”, followed in 2019, though it was less successful, pulling in under $500 million.

There has been lots of talk over the years of a third film in the franchise, with the film’s producers Duncan Henderson and Jeff Kirschenbaum confirming development was underway.  And most recently, on the official D23 Inside Disney podcast, Angelina Jolie hinted that she would return.

Recently, during an interview with the Wall Street Journal, it was revealed that Angelina Jolie is still signed on for a third “Maleficent” film, in addition to having other deals in place with British-based company Fremantle and is also producing a Broadway show, “The Outsider”.

Officially, no news on a third film has been announced, and we will unlikely hear much, possibly until filming gets underway or until an event like next year’s D23 Ultimate Fan Event.

You can watch both “Maleficent” and “Malifecent: Mistress Of Evil” on Disney+.
