20th Television and ABC are developing a new legal drama series that is being written and executive produced by Bill Chais and Pat Cunnane.
The currently Untitled North Carolina Governor project, is about a brash Bronx public defender who comes to North Carolina to reform a dysfunctional, seriously underfunded criminal justice system, putting him on a collision course with the tough-on-crime governor, when, desperate and out of options, he invokes an arcane law that can compel any attorney to serve as defence counsel in criminal trials… and assigns the first case to the governor herself, an attorney in good standing. Coincidentally, the current North Carolina Governor, Roy Cooper (D), also practised law before entering public service.
Bill Chais is a former public defender and has previously written “Franklin & Bash” and “Designated Survivor”. Pat Cunnane has also previously worked with Bill on “Designated Survivor” and was President Barack Obama’s Senior Writer and Deputy Director of Messaging at the White House.
Also, executive producing the series is Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, who previously worked on “Black Sails” and “Jericho”, in addition to Warren Littlefield. These three are also working together on the upcoming Hulu/Star Original series “The Old Man”.
When this series is eventually released, we should expect it to be released on ABC and Hulu in the United States. In contrast, internationally, it will likely be released on Disney+ as an original series.
