20th Century Studios has acquired the rights to a new “untitled” Sister comedy from Gloria Sanchez Productions, which will star Awkwafina and Sandra Oh.
The film will follow a brilliant but tightly wound, Jeopardy-obsessed young woman (Awkwafina) who must reunite with her estranged, train-wreck of a sister (Sandra Oh) when they’re forced to come up with the money to cover their mother’s gambling debts. The two embark on a wild, cross country trek in a desperate hope to win enough cash the only way they can think of—by turning our reluctant hero into a bonafide JEOPARDY champion.
Jessica Yu will direct this new comedy, and the script is being written by Jen D’Angelo, who has recently written the Disney+ Original movie, “Hocus Pocus 2”.
According to Deadline, Gloria Sanchez Production’s Alex Brown will be an executive producer, with the companies founders Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum producing the film along with Itay Reiss and Maggie Haskins. 20th Century Studios Sarah Shepard is overseeing the project.
Originally, Netflix had acquired the rights to make the project, but eventually ended up back on the market, with 20th Century Studios being aggressive in trying to get the project, to put it into development.
No other details have been revealed, such as a release window. It’s also not known if this will be a theatrical release, or if it will be going straight to Disney’s streaming services.
