We are just over 100 days until the launch of Disney+ in the US and many people are getting excited about all the new shows and films that will be available, along with catching up with some of the classics.

Disney+ will have thousands of episodes of shows, along with hundreds of movies from across Disney, Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, Fox and National Geographic.  And by the end of the first year it will contain an impressive collection of more than 7,500 television episodes and 500 films.

Ever since Disney revealed these details at the Investor Day event in April, I get asked multiple times a day:

“Is THIS going to be Disney+?”

By many people have been asking one question to me through social media, comments and messages.  Some of the time I can answer with a “yes”, since its already been confirmed (You can check out the full list by clicking here.)

But the majority of times I have to say, I would assume so, but it’s not been confirmed.

Many people read through the list and are disappointed that their favorite show or movie is missing or aren’t impressed that the launch line-up is so small.  Which I understand, the announced line-up isn’t as impressive as it should be.

The simple reason for this, is that Disney hasn’t announced everything yet.  Disney hasn’t actually confirmed any legacy content since the Investors Day event in April about shows and movies from Disney’s vault.

Hopefully this will change soon, with a Disney+ presentation taking place at the D23 Expo at the end of August, we will no doubt find out more about what’s coming to Disney+, both old and new, especially since this presentation is scheduled to last for 90 minutes.

While the majority of the D23 Expo presentation will no doubt focus on the original new content such as Star Wars: The Mandalorian, High School Musical: The Musical, Lady & The Tramp, The World According To Jeff Goldblum and others.

Even after the D23 Expo, Disney still have a couple more months to inform people of what’s going to be available at launch.  I doubt we will know the entire list of shows and movies coming to Disney+ until the app is downloaded on our devices and we can see everything for ourselves.

There is also the issue with Netflix, as many of the recent titles currently available such as Mary Poppins Returns, Infinity War and Solo: A Star Wars Story, are bound by an existing contract.  So these titles have to finish their 18 month run on Netflix before they can be moved onto Disney+.  Because of how the Marvel Cinematic Universe works, with its inter-connected storytelling, its much more noticeable if a movie is missing.

And there is also just some titles that Disney doesn’t have the streaming rights to, such as some of the early MCU titles and the Indiana Jones movies.  All of which is confusing to the consumer, especially when they are expecting everything owned by Disney to be on Disney+ on day one.

Disney will be performing a balancing act, delivering enough content on launch day to impress everyone, while holding back some content to make it look like they are adding new movies and shows regularly.

They are also trying to keep Disney+ in the news cycle, almost every week since April, Disney has announced something new for the new streaming platform.   But this news cycle is generally focused on new content, rather than legacy content, such as saying “Operation Dumbo Drop” or “Herbie Rides Again” will be available at launch, isn’t going to get much publicity.

Until then, its just a waiting game until Disney+ launches.
