National Geographic has said that it is “thrilled” to be part of its joint venture with Disney and how they view it as a huge opportunity to grow on a global scale.

“We are thrilled about the opportunity that the JV will present for National Geographic to grow on a global scale. The launch of direct-to-consumer platform, Disney+, will be a major moment in the industry and it’s exciting that National Geographic will be part of it. We will also work closely with Hotstar in India,”

Gary E. Knell, chairperson of National Geographic Partners, told IANS in an e-mail interview.  Before adding:

“The partnership will benefit the National Geographic Society to become an stronger media organisation amplifying their efforts and shining a light on the important work they are doing towards achieving a planet in balance. The possibilities are endless and I look forward to this chapter.”

National Geographic is set to be one of the core 5 brands of the upcoming Disney+ streaming service and over 250 hours of content has already been announced for in November, including the Oscar winning documentary movie, Free Solo.

And it’s not just in terms of television and streaming services that National Geographic will be adding to Disney, with its publishing arm, consumer products and travel services, its one brand that fits the Disney brand perfectly.

Disney CEO Bob Iger also told IANS in a statement.

“This is an extraordinary and historic moment for us — one that will create significant long-term value for our company and our shareholders. Combining Disney’s and 21st Century Fox’s wealth of creative content and proven talent creates the pre-eminent global entertainment company, well positioned to lead in an incredibly dynamic and transformative era.”
